Joana Calderon is one of the 25 percent of Latinas who have had an abortion, many of whom deal with a culture of shame and silence. Joana grew up in a traditional Catholic home where talking about sex or birth control was taboo. When she became pregnant as a 20-year-old college student and scheduled a medication abortion with the help of Planned Parenthood, she was afraid to tell her mother. To her surprise, sharing the experience brought mother and daughter closer. Joana's mom Rose now participates in marches and rallies advocating for safe and accessible abortion.
